The art of weaving in India is as old as civilization itself, the warp, the weft, the fabric, the mystique, the imagery, the fantasy - India is home to them all.

Fabulous brocades, near-invisible muslins, delicate and vibrant embroideries.And vibrant dyes. From spun-gold weaves for Cleopatra's boudoir to Yves St. Laurent's magical creations ;Indian fabrics have garbed the world beautifully !

The brocades of Varanasi,are, the most well known of Indian textile.The brocade or 'kinkhwab' (fabric of dreams) is the weaving of pure silk and gold strands to create a lush fabric. Each region has its own individual brocade.

Gujarat is generally considered the home of silk and brocade weaving after Varanasi. Tanchoi was brought to India from China. The fabric is woven with a different technique - a combination of Indian and Chinese style.

One of the most coveted of Indian fabrics,the double Ikat Patola, originates from Orissa and Pochampalli in Andhra Pradesh. From the south comes the Temple sari,the Kanjeevaram,from the town of Kanchipuram.

The richness of the Indian culture is reflected in its textiles too.One marvels at the beautiful intricate designs of the 'bandhej' or the 'tie and dye', originally from the state of Rajasthan, now popular all over the country. Other traditional dyeing techniques like 'batik' and block printing still exist,there appeal lies as much in their techniques as in skills of the craftsmen who have kept these art-forms alive.

In India fabrics are not mere warp and weft.They are heirlooms handed down from generation to generation treasured through the years.The beauty of Indian fabrics is so hypnotizing that the West has been enchanted by it and has never resisted creating garments from them.
